GSM is now widely used and it provides common standard. So that GSM subscriber can use their handsets throughout the world where GSM is used. A cell is basic unit of a cellular system. The cello phones used by a subscriber are called MS (Mobile Station). BTS (Base Transreceiver System) control the radio interface for communication of a mobile technology subscriber to MSC (Mobile switching Center) i.e.; mobile exchange in BSC (Base Station Controller) controls are the BTS and managers radio functions of a GSM network. Subscriber information is stored in smart card called SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) which is kept in cello phones. The SIM is only part through which subscriber communicates with GSM system. The virtual identity, i.e. number allotted to subscriber is called MSISDN (Mobile Station ISD Number). It is ten digit numbers which is unique to a particular subscriber and GSM service provider. Other services provided by GSM are SMS (Short message service), MMS, GPRS, high speed data communication and fax etc. In India it is likely that cellular phones may successfully exceed traditional wire line i.e. landline telephone in near future.
