1. Mobile phones
Who said mobile phones were simply meant for making calls? The boundaries of Cellular technology were pushed further with the arrival of smart phones that added a lot more zing to the humble mobile. With ramped up processing power, increased bandwidth and a host of innovative features, smart phones like Apple’s iphone and the ubiquitous BlackBerry became the toys of choice for many. There biggest contribution, however, was to fulfill a need that most people did not even realize existing-adding more power to the mobile.
2. Digital cameras
A game changer for the photography business, digital cameras altered the way we click pictures, store them or share them. ‘Point, clicks shoot’ became the simple mantra for taking a photograph. With its features like auto-focus, antiblur, face recognition and the likes, the digital camera emerged as the full proof way to great shoots that could be used by kid next door or even his granny.
3. Laptops
The decade saw the shrinking of the personal computer-from the bulky desktops to lighter and consequently, easier to use laptops. Of course, it helped that laptop prices also shrunk correspondingly, making them accessible to a greater number of people. Somewhere down the line, laptops metamorphosed into avatars like the table PC, which had a touch screen interface and were more expensive, but by and large, the firm favourite has been the all-black notebook, designed in the clamshell style to protect the screen and the keyboard when closed.
4. Mp3 magic
Till the time it came along, the only way to listen to digital music was to sit in front of a computer. The ipod, launched in 2001, changed all that. By combining portability with the plenty of storage, it gave music lovers access to hundreds of songs, while on the go, and brought the MP3 format into the mainstream. That it looked sleek and compact, was extremely easy to use and could slide into your pocket were all pluses. Over the years, Apple has astutely brought out an updated model every year, and now the range extends from the tiny shuffle and Nano to the more recent classic, that can hold up to 40,000 songs.
5. Growth of Google
Nobody can deny that this has been the decade of the big ‘G’. Google grew from step by step and is now the strong market leader, with almost 70% of world’s search queries being diverted through it. Google has also made forays into mobile operating systems Email, photo management and office software.
6. Pen drive
Pen drives also known as the flesh drive or the universal serial bus (USB) flesh drive. Its plug and store features made the task of transferring files between computers smoother and relegated earlier portable storage devises like the floppy disk to the recycle bin.
7. Staying Connected
Never before was the internet so much about you, your family, your country and world. Social networking sites like as Yahoo, Orcut, and myspace worked on your premise and hit the jackpots.
